Why the ProctorU Platform Needs Access to Certain Test-taker Data
Our key responsibility to clients and test-takers is to ensure fairness and integrity in the testing process. In a classroom, proctors can physically observe test-takers to make sure Susan hasn’t shown up to take Sarah’s test. They can also ensure test-takers are following all testing rules and protocols. Because we are proctoring remotely, we use alternative methods to verify test-taker’s identity and to make sure the testing environment is fair to everyone, regardless of their location.

How the ProctorU Platform Secures an Exam Session and Upholds Integrity
Depending on the parameters set by the institution or organization, we can do several things, all of which are disclosed to the test-taker before the test starts. We use an application to lock down access to the internet or other computer files during the test. This application doesn’t give anyone else access to the test-taker’s computer during the test and it doesn’t affect the test-taker’s device after the test ends. We also record video and audio during every test. With our Live+ service line, these recordings are monitored in real-time to identify any violations of the institution’s testing parameters.
Data Retention Policies
- The ProctorU Platform only uses the data captured during test sessions to conduct online proctoring. As our Privacy Policy states: ProctorU does not use any test-taker's personal information for any purpose other than for facilitating the proctoring of online exams.
- Once an exam session ends, the proctoring session data is stored in US-based encrypted servers (AES 256). The screen recordings and webcam audio/video are accessible to the institution or organization for a period determined by the institution or organization but are automatically deleted, per NIST 800-88 guidelines, after one year, unless a shorter duration has been requested by your testing institution or organization.
- The information and recordings belong to the testing institution or organization and we act as a service provider. We do not own the data, the institution or organization does. We don’t sell or otherwise monetize any data from test-takers and we never market to test-takers nor allow any of our service providers to do so.
